Renowned as a superlative fighting dog in days of old, the Mastiff accompanied knights into battle, was used in packs to hunt lion, deer and wolf, as well as being a combatant in leopard, bear and bull-baiting competitions, (not to mention being pitted against human gladiators in the Roman Circus!)
Despite this chequered background, the Mastiff has developed into an outstanding family dog. A combination of grandness and good nature, courage and docility, the Mastiff makes a quiet, dignified and affectionate pet. He is usually extremely patient with children and smaller animals plus, it goes without saying, is a consummate protector and guard dog. Due to his large size he requires training and socialisation from an early age.
Befitting his massive size, the Mastiff consumes a large amount of food, but although his feeding needs are considerable, his grooming requirements are minimal. The Mastiff does, however, require a large yard and regular exercise. He is also prone to heatstroke and needs extra care in warm climates.
